It’s no secret that over the past couple of years, I’ve struggled with anxiety; in anything from work through to my home life. One of the things that I’ve found really helps me to stop focusing on all the bad stuff – whether it’s money, or deadlines, or general procrastination – is to practice self-care on a daily basis in lots of little ways. Here are three easy ways you can introduce self-care to your day:
One. Do something you enjoy that keeps you ‘in the moment’
Often I struggle to avoid thinking forward, to what will or might happen. The best way to get through that is to do things that force your brain to focus on the now, no matter how much it likes to wander! My personal favourite is to play video games, but reading comics and easy, girly novels on my iPad is a close second, because it’s not too taxing but still occupies my mind. My favourite comic series is currently Giant Days, which I highly recommend. I also utilise the Forest app as it ensures I’m not distracting myself with my phone and social media consantly.
Two. Practice Mindfulness
Going to counselling introduced me to mindfulness, and though I was always sceptical about things like it before, I actually find as part of a daily routine it really helps to reduce my anxiety levels. I use an app called Calm, which does come with a subscription fee, but having used it nearly every day for three months it’s paid for itself several times over. There are different meditations and themes depending on what you like or need, and a good selection of ambient noises if you’re picky like I am!
Three. Take care of yourself
There are so many different ways you can take care of yourself! It might be as simple as painting your nails, eating a bit healthier or walking more. My favourite ways to take care of myself are to stick on a facemask, throw a Lush bubble bar in the bath and have a soak. I’m also trying to exercise a little every day to improve my health and leave myself feeling a bit happier. Working on my planner is also a fun way to while away the time, and as I have to focus on what I’m doing it’s a great way to also be ‘in the moment’.
Do you have any other tips and tricks for introducing self-care to your life? I’d love to know them.
